BEI provided construction support services to Northwest Airlines for the McNamara Terminal Project at the Wayne County Detroit Metropolitan Airport. These services included cost estimating, construction inspection, schedule preparation and monitoring, value engineering, construction testing, change order estimating, and claims analysis.

The centerpiece of the Complex is the McNamara Terminal itself. The Terminal includes approximately 2.0 million square feet of space; 14,500 tons of steel; 120,000 cubic yards of concrete; 400,000 feet of heating and cooling pipe; 150,000 feet of ductwork; 1.5 miles of extra wide moving sidewalks; 5 miles of luggage conveyor belts; 106 ticket counters; 24 curbside check-in positions; 21 security checkpoints; 90 e-ticket machines; 97 gates; a twin express tram, the world's only fully enclosed automated people mover, which rides on a cushion of air above an elevated guideway serving the nearly one mile long main Concourse A; a 900-foot underground tunnel with walls which change colors synchronized to music connecting Concourse A to Concourses B and C; four Northwest World Clubs totaling 26,000 square feet; potentially over 80 food and retail shops; and a 40-foot granite water feature in the center of Concourse A which shoots water in choreographed streams.

The complex also includes an 11,500 car parking garage with enclosed moving walkways; luggage check-in; pedestrian bridge to terminal; and 10 e-ticket machines in the garage. Additional projects included an energy center; and extensive infrastructure work including underground utilities and a network of access roads and bridges.

BEI engaged URS as a subconsultant for specialty system inspection of baggage handling and electronics.
